LICHTENTALER ALLEE
If you only have time for one walk, make
for this 1. 5 mile ribbon of greenery. Shaded
by oaks and ablaze with fl owers in spring
and summer, this park runs beside the Oos
river to Kloster Lichtenthal, a 1 3th-century
Cistercian abbey. Break up your stroll
with contemporary art at the neoclassical
State Art Gallery, as well as modernist
masterpieces of the Picasso and Miró era
at the striking Museum Frieder Burda,
designed by renowned New York-based
architect Richard Meier.

ROSENNEUHEITENGARTEN
Often referred to as the rose capital
of Germany, in summer, the Rose Society
Garden is a riot of award-winning fl owers.
Beautifully situated on the low-lying slopes
of Fremersberg, this sprawling garden holds
its own among Europe’s fi nest. Wandering
beneath rose-draped arbours in the soft
light of a summer afternoon will deliver
a hit of heady romance, especially if you
time your visit to catch the philharmonic
concerts in late June, when classical music
fl oats through the air.

NATURAL SPRINGS
The Romans put the Baden (bathe) into
Baden when they raved about the curative
powers of its thermal waters 2 ,000 years
ago. These still bubble up from 12 natural
springs, pumping 8 00,0 00 litres a day at
temperatures of up to 68 C. Strip off for a hot-
cold swim in the marble-mosaic Roman-
Irish bath at Friedrichsbad, or leap into the
pools, grottoes, surge channels and saunas
at the glass-fronted Caracalla Spa.

REBLAND
The River Rhine and France are just a
cork pop from Baden-Baden, and the region
has wines to rival its neighbours. Come and
picnic among vines dotted with monasteries
and manors, and taste crisp, mineral-
rich Rieslings or oak barrel-aged pinots at
family-run Weingüter (wineries). Top billing
goes to Schloss Neuweier, where grapes
have been grown on its steep slopes since
the 12th century, as well as cooperative-run
Weinhaus am Mauerberg.
