full-colour volumes from the renovated original copper printing plates. The volumes
are a magnificent tribute to Joseph Banks, Daniel Solander and Sydney Parkinson.
Ten years after the death of Sir Joseph Banks another expedition was preparing
to leave England for South America, Australia and to circumnavigate the world. The
object of the expedition was to complete the survey of the coastlines of Patagonia and
Tierra del Fuego commenced under Captain Pringle Stokes between 1826 and 1830
and to survey the coastlines of Chile and Peru. The expedition would also establish
for the first time a global network of latitude and longitude measurements at specific
ports around the world using the sea-borne chronometers developed by John Harrison.
It so happened that a young inexperienced naturalist named Charles Darwin had been
recruited to join the voyage as a dining companion for the ship’s captain Robert
FitzRoy.
