Thesinger-songwriterotherwiseknown as MarkLizotte,

of a trilogy) on Fri., Aug. 2 ahead of a national tour in
October. Diesel tells WHO about the song that ...... he first learnt to play on guitar
We had a few José Feliciano 7-inch singles that one of my six
older siblings would have bought. He was my first guitar
hero around age 5. ‘Light My Fire’ had me trying to get my
hands around the chord progressions on my sister’s acoustic.
... reminds him of summer holidays
A Paul McCartney song, ‘Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey’, which
my 5-year-old brain instantly assumed was The Beatles. We
were in an immigrant hostel in the west of Sydney – we’d just
migrated from a US winter – and I remember the sun never
going down at night and us out on this playing field trying to
acclimatise and that song was playing everywhere.
... he connected with as a teenager
‘Highway Chile’ by Jimi Hendrix. I had gone through a few
schools from my family moving around and had experienced
a fair amount of bullying. That song felt like a “f--k you!”
... he turns to when he’s feeling down
I tend to rub salt in the wound – I’m just not that easily fooled
with a “cheery” song. Lately it’s been ‘Killing the Blues’ by
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, which makes my wife and me
smile and sob at the same time as it will always be our dog
Rufus’ song.
... is in his collection that may surprise people
‘Close To You’ by The Carpenters. We spend so much time in
the car touring and sometimes we need soothing sounds.
Karen’s voice is velvet.
... brings back the best memories from the Johnny Diesel
and the Injectors era of his career
‘Parisienne Hotel’. We opened the set with it many times
and I remember ruffling a few feathers with its bombastic
nature. We liked upsetting people a little. I still do!
... he never tires of playing live
‘Tip Of My Tongue’ is always nice to deconstruct. It’s been
such a durable song for me.DIESEL
