Group Leisure & Travel – May 2019

(Steven Felgate) #1
If you’re looking for entertainment during your
stay in Coventry, the Belgrade Theatre features a
range of shows, including touring productions,
stand-up comedy and tribute acts. Shane Richie
stars in The Entertainer in October or, To t a l l y Ti n a
will have you dancing to some of Tina Turner’s
biggest hits in November, claiming to be the
closest thing to a real Turner concert. Groups of
11 or more benefit from discounts too.

Slightly outside the vibrant city centre is the
historic Lunt Roman Fort, where groups will
discover exactly why the Romans built a series of
fortifications across the midlands. The partially-
reconstructed timber fort allows visitors to
imagine what it would have been like to train
horses in the gyrus, something not found
anywhere else in the Roman Empire. Open during
the summer and October school holidays, groups
are advised to book in advance.

Coventry is the birthplace of 2-Tone, a movement
that originated among young musicians in the
city, primarily mixing ska music with punk rock.
The record label, 2Tone Records, was formed in
the late 1970s with The Specials releasing the
iconic ‘Ghost Town’ in 1981 through the label.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the genre
with a range of events happening at Coventry
Music Museum throughout 2019.

It’s known for the legend of Lady Godiva: The
900-year-old tale depicts how the wife of Leofric
rode through the streets naked on horseback to
protest against taxes. One-man named Thomas,
peaked through his window at the sight, coining
the phrase we use today, a ‘peeping tom’. You
can see the tale unfold on the city’s clock tower.
