“I LOVE THAT
CHILDREN ALWAYS
BELIEVE THEY CAN
BE ANYTHING THEY
WANT TO BE”
Lucy Zelić
Thehost of SBS’sThe World Game
passionately fought off critics who tried to shame
her for pronouncing soccer players’ names
correctly(ie doing her job properly) during
the recent World Cup.
“My life changed forever the moment my sister gave birth to
her first daughter, Zara, 10 years ago. She weighed a bit
over three kilos but she introduced me to a love so profound,
it made me wonder if I could ever feel that way
for anyone else. I did, of course; when her sister Sienna
arrived two years later, that very same feeling returned.
In fact, the feeling was even greater because now I had
two nieces to love.
Over the years, I have learnt so much from them. Zara is
thoughtful, practical, creative and incredibly bright. Sienna is
quirky, sweet, hilarious, adventurous and very much an old
soul. Together, they have taught me about unconditional
love, the importance of patience and the value of perspective.
When I’m with them, all of my
worldly stresses slip away.
To them, I am their ‘Teta’ (Aunty
in Croatian), their friend and
protector. They are aware of my
presence on television, but their
greatest fascination lies more with
pulling off my false eyelashes (one
for each girl) after I’ve been on air.
The girls have this unabashed
zest for life that constantly inspires
me. Zara wants to be a ‘doctor
vet’; Sienna wants to be a waitress.
I love that children always believe
they can be anything they want to
be, no matter how big or small those ambitions are. It’s only
when we become older that we begin to feel the pressures
of reality and convince ourselves that our dreams are out of
bounds. Thanks to them, I no longer feel that way about
anything I pursue. I hope one day I’ll be able to pass those
values on to my own children.”>
