THE BEST OF THE WEEK AHEAD SEVEN-DAY LISTINGS FOR JUNE 5-11
Dolly Alderton’s (below)
script of her best-selling
memoir of life as a beautiful
young woman in swinging
2012 London is, like its main
character, bright, charming
and full of contradictions.
Maggie (Emma Appleton)
and best school friend Birdy
(Bel Powley) have taken
a flatshare in Camden
(a boyfriend with a fine
line in manipulation
tells her “whoever
you’re looking for
already left”) and,
with mobiles^
in hand, are
embarking
on adult life at
the ripe age of
- Alderton is an unashamed
fan of Sex & the City, and
that is certainly apparent:
nobody appears to have
any real money worries;
dream jobs materialise
magically out of chance
meetings; parents are accused
of being, if anything, too
loving; and any jeopardy
is quickly resolved.
This is a tale of big city
life and relationships
that is less I May
Destroy You and
more I May Cuddle
You to Death.
A fantasy, but
a thoroughly
diverting one.

There is more to Jonathan
Demme’s 1991 thriller than
Hannibal Lecter. Jodie Foster
is superb in the lead role — an
FBI cadet who interviews the
suave cannibal — and this
woman’s pursuit of another
serial killer is a tale in itself.
Yet Anthony Hopkins’s icy
performance is definitely the
main attraction: it gives us
one of the most transfixing
villains in cinema.
FILM OF
THE WEEK
Assignment
Thursday, BBC World
Service, 8.06pm
Tim Whewell investigates
the transport of Ukrainians
into Russia, many deported
against their will. Despite
Russia’s claim of helping some
build new lives there, many
are trying to get out of Russia,
helped by an underground
network of Russian activists.
The West Wing

Wouldn’t it be nice to enter a
world where the country’s
leader was a decent visionary
with power and authority. If
Aaron Sorkin’s White House
drama now seems a tad too
sentimental for this age, it
still delivers as witty, fast-
paced escapism with a cast
— led by Martin Sheen’s good
and honourable president
— who believe utterly in the
sparkling, malapert dialogue.
