I came to the conclusion a while back that all of us are a little
weird.
I mean just look at what we do for kicks. Leaving the comfort of
our plush homes to rough it in the sticks, regardless of inclement
weather or the threat of a wild beast or outback serial killer.
We drive across car-shattering terrain, just to pitch up in the
middle of a cyclone, or a pindan dust storm, or during crocodile
mating season – and for what!?...
For the glimpses. The glimpses of natural beauty that make our
entire life worthwhile.
They might last a couple of seconds or they might last a couple of
days, but these glimpses give us purpose, and allow us to truly engage
in something much bigger than us.
We chase these glimpses across hell and highwater, and when
we meet up with others we frantically try to explain our shared
connection. These are the ultimate talking points.
This is why this magazine and its photography exist. We strive to
showcase as many of these glimpses as possible, for readers who
have experienced these places, or who want to experience them.
Which is why we have amassed the nest posse of offroad
photographers in the land, with the likes of Carlisle Rogers, James
Carey, Sean Scott, Matt Williams, and of course Dan Proud, all
peppering our masthead.
Dan Proud’s on the road more than all of them, from the Kimberley
to the Snowy, and for years he’s famously run his studio base out of
Toowoomba, where his glimpses of offroad magic are sold online to
frothing 4WDers.
Why has it been such a success? Because as far as a single talking
point goes, having a Dan Proud image as a centrepiece is the
ultimate living room statement.
Not only is it great to kick off stories with mates who pop over for a
barbie, but it’s even more useful to inspire you, when you look up at it
each day and wonder what the hell you’re doing in your living room
when you could be out there chasing moments like these.
We spoke to Dan earlier this month, while he was sorting through
his images from the High Plains (p8), and he told us a lot of the prints
people bought from him were purchased by wives and girlfriends,
hoping to blow their partner’s minds with wall-hanging gifts.
So, umm, hint, hint, to any wives and girlfriends who might be
