While many 4WD tracks in the mountains can be closed from
June to the end of October, this doesn’t mean you can’t still
nd some great out-of the-way campsites.
Ensure you check the road and weather forecast but
remember that the mountains have the ability to go from end-
less blue skies to howling white-outs in a matter of moments.
You can’t rely on phone reception so prepare for several days
extra supplies if you get caught in bad weather.
- CHECK THE WEATHER FORECAST AND ROAD CONDITIONS.
- PREPARE YOUR VEHICLE.
Vehicle preparation is similar to most trips. Good tyres,
good brakes, recovery gear.
The challenge of getting stuck overnight on a track in
summer may not be an issue.
But in winter, it can be life threatening. Some additional
checks before you hit the winter tracks include ensuring
your car battery is in tip-top condition as a battery needs
more energy in cold temperatures to kick over. For older
vehicles you will want to check your glow plugs.
Also, determine if anti-freeze is recommended in your
radiator and if you have diesel top up with Alpine diesel
mix which is available at service stations in the area.
THIS SPREAD & OVERLEAF: Sleeping in winter colour, where greens and blues
transmogrify into greys and whites.
- CHECK THE WEATHER FORECAST AND ROAD CONDITIONS.
