FAST FACTS – ALPINE NATIONAL PARK

THE ALPINE NATIONAL PARK is located 350-450km north
east of Melbourne. It covers much of the higher areas of the
Great Dividing Range in Victoria, including the state’s highest
point, Mount Bogong.
Camping is permitted throughout much of the park. There
are designated campsites with pit toilets, picnic tables and re-
places. Bush camping is allowed in other areas of the park how-
ever campers must be fully self-sufcient and bring all food, wa-
ter and camping equipment.
4WDing is popular during the dry weather during the
warmer months. Track closures can be common during wetter
periods. There are many tracks from beginner level to very difcult,
very remote tracks. Something for everyone.

FAST FACTS – WONNANGATTA VALLEY REGION

THE WONNANGATTA VALLEY is a remote valley in the Victorian
High Country. The town of Manseld is located 130km away, and
the valley is approximately 350km from Melbourne.
TALBOTVILLE sprang to life as a gold mining town when gold
was discovered in the Crooked River, but vanished when the
gold ran out. Today, Talbotville is a camping area with lush green
grass, bordered by the Crooked River. The Talbotville camping
area provides picnic tables and replaces with cooking plates, and
fresh water can be collected from the Crooked River.
4WD tracks within the region include the infamous Zeka
Spur Track, which descends steeply into the Wonnangatta Valley,
and Billy Goat Bluff, which is rated as a very difcult track and
follows the top of a steep ridge and affords stunning views of
the region. Both tracks are relatively technical and feature steep
ascents and descents as well as sharp rocks, ruts and loose gravel
sections, and require quality all terrain tyres and a two-inch life
as a minimum.
Camping is available in a number of fantastic campsites
throughout the Wonnangatta Valley region. The Wonnangatta
Homestead campsite offers basic free camping, composting toilets
are the only facilities. Talbotville is a fantastic place to camp down by
the Crooked River with more facilities provided. Campers are advised
to bring their own drinking water and rewood, and to be aware of
re bans that may be in place over the summer months.
