I read Rachel Watson’s Cat Care
question in your July issue about
why her new cat kept hiding, and
wondered if you could pass her this
message. My cat Tabitha was a rescue
cat and hid from us when we brought
her home. We felt we didn’t have
a cat because we never saw her, and
we referred to her as the ‘ghost cat’.
In the end, we brought in an animal
behaviourist, who, like your expert,
advised to leave her alone and ignore
her. As harsh as that sounds, it did
work. We had to ignore her to give her
the confidence to come into the room.
It has taken seven years to build
her confidence up. It is only now that

we are beginning to stroke her, and
this is down to bringing in another
cat. I’m not suggesting you go and
get another cat, but bringing in
a male of the same breed has worked
wonders for Tabitha. Loki was another
stray and loves humans, and Tabitha
loves him. She has been watching
him closely and has now gained the
confidence to sit on our knees.
Please, please don’t give up on
your cat. Be patient. I can’t tell you
how much it means to see Tabitha
gaining confidence every day. It is
rewarding and makes your rescue
even more special.

SUGAR BABY
Here is Niamh, my very special black ‘sugar
baby’ — she was diagnosed as diabetic when
she was aged 14 years 10 months. Now, she
is 15-and-a-half and doing well on twice-daily
insulin injections. I have always had black cats
and they are my favourites.

LOVELY EBONY
This is my beautiful shadow, Ebony, who was
adopted from Cats Protection. She’s my only
black cat. My other three are tabbies and
Ebs keeps them all in check! Her favourite
things are: cuddling, supervising cooking
and cleaning, being a food taste-tester, and
climbing. She can’t really miaow and tends to
let out a squeak. She’s such a beauty.

BLACK CATS
ARE AMAZING!
This is Sophie, who
was a stray. She is
very unique and
slightly insane, but
that is why we love
her. She never fails
to make me giggle.
Black, and black
and white cats are
amazing, and no
different to the more
colourful ones.
