SOLID SHARMA

INDIA’S Shubhankar Sharma has emerged as
one of the stars of the European Tour after wins
in Malaysia and South Africa in recent months.
His progress obviously caught the attention of
the Masters Committee, who issued him with
an invitation for this month’s tournament.
Here, we can see why Sharma has developed
into such a quality ball-striker and will secure
plenty more Tour victories. His top of the
backswing position is very good and one all
average golfers would do well to imitate.
When the club arrives at the top of the
backswing there are four parts that have to be in
the correct place. The fi rst key element is for the
club to be pointing over the right shoulder (for
right-handers) towards the target or slightly left
of the target.
What does this mean? When you address the
ball, the ball is on what we refer to as the
‘intended ball fl ight line’, and your feet are
parallel to that line. At the top of the backswing
the shaft has to be parallel to your heel line or
parallel left of the target.
This puts you into the best position to drop
the hands straight down and create some good
club lag and generate power.
