Introducing the New
Vokey SM7 Wedges
from Titleist
It took just a couple of weeks for Titleist’s latest wedges,
Vokey Design SM7, to become the most played wedge
on the PGA Tour.
Legendary wedge designer, and Canadian Golf Hall
of Fame member, Bob Vokey and his team’s
commitment to improving upon the previous SM6
model in three key wedge performance characteristics
gives the world’s best players, like Jordan Spieth who
uses four SM7s, confi dence in the new model.
“One thing I know from working with tour players
the last 20-plus years is that they won’t put a new
wedge in play unless it’s better,” Vokey said. “Every
time we come out with a new one, we have to prove it.
I can’t tell you how many times over the last couple
years players asked me and Aaron (Dill) how we were
going to make something better than SM6. Based on
how quickly guys are switching to SM7, we know we’ve
done it.”
Expanding on the already wide-ranging Vokey short
game fi tting options, 23 combinations of loft, bounce
and sole grind are available, with fi ve of Vokey’s
favourite grinds – F, S, M, K, L – joined by the all new D
grind, which offers high bounce and a crescent shaped
sole for versatility. This means there is an SM7 wedge
for every swing type and course condition.
Introduced in the popular SM6, Vokey’s ‘Progressive
Centre of Gravity’ (CG) has been enhanced and refi ned
further in the new model, to improve trajectory,
consistency and feel.
CAD technology allows Titleist to precisely place the
CG in each wedge loft, visible on the back of the club,
directly in line with the typical impact location. The
higher lofted wedges in the SM7 features a higher CG
to deliver increased consistency from a variety of lies,
whereas the low lofts’ CG has been lowered further
than in the SM6 to deliver the ball fl ight control
Titleist’s Tour players prefer.
The seventh generation of Vokey’s Spin Milled
groove technology has also undergone an upgrade,
with tighter tolerances producing as much as 100rpm
of extra spin on average. The plated models (Tour
Chrome and Brushed Steel) go through an additional
cutting process for more spin, while every SM7 groove
is inspected to ensure maximum spin and a heat
treatment is applied to every head to ensure the high
spin rates last longer.
To allow each individual player to match their
wedges to their game beyond the loft, bounce and
sole, the new SM7 is offered in three fi nishes. Classic
‘Tour Chrome’, ‘Brushed Steel’ that is darker and more
polished in appearance than the similar option
available in SM6, while the all new ‘Jet Black’ is a raw
fi nish complete with black paint fi ll throughout the
head and is the result of regular requests from Titleist’s
Tour staff for the same look.
SRP: $229 (steel), $269 (graphite).
