ACTION STATION

CONCEIVED IN 1979 as a
way to fi nd the best
all-round rider, supermoto
takes place on a track that
features both dirt and
tarmac. Riders must be
capable in road racing, dirt
track and motocross.
In the last 40 years,
supermoto has developed
into its own genre and many
riders dedicate themselves
solely to the discipline.
Events are usually held on
road-racing circuits or kart
tracks and don’t always
include an off-road section.
As the sport has grown,
outfi ts like the NSW
Supermoto Riders’ Club
have popped up to cater for

motard fans. The NSWSMR
formed in 2009 after the
collapse of Mark Avard’s
motard series. In the
beginning, roughly 30
members took part in ride
days on the tar at the
Eastern Creek International
Karting Raceway that will
soon also feature Sydney
Indoor MotoX Park.
After about two years
they organised a full motard
venue, with tar and dirt
sections, at the Pacifi c Park
Kart Racing Track in Port
Macquarie. The club now
runs regular ride days at
Eastern Creek but race
meetings at Port Macquarie.
It hasn’t all been smooth

sailing, with some hurdles in
relation to access to the
tracks, but the club
currently has 150 members
and a four-person
committee dedicated to
improving the club and the
sport. The club supports
Junior riders, allowing
youngsters to take part in
ride days.
The club’s members travel
across the country
competing in state and
national level events. In
November, six travelled to
Perth for the Supermoto
Nationals at Wanneroo in
WA with assistance from the
NSWSMR.
