Before you start, make sure your lips are in good condi-
tion—smooth and hydrated. If they’re a little dry or f laky,
pop on a thick layer of Vaseline or lip balm, then go get
dressed, do your hair, or chase down a Pokémon for at least
five minutes. Afterward, come back, blot, and gently wipe
everything off with a face cloth. (You can invest in a lip
scrub to do this step but, Page argues, it’s not necessary.)

Pick a color that pops against your skin. Go for
opposites: If you have cool under tones, pick a wa r m
sha de li ke a n ora nge - or br ick-red. If you’re wa r m or
olive, try a cool blue-red or burgundy. The contrast
w ill make you look more alive, especially when you get into the
deeper shades. But again, there are no rules when it comes to
experimenting—if you feel good in a color, go for it!

If you want a stained look, opposite, prime lips with a
thin layer of balm, then pat or press on the lipstick with
the pad of your fingertip.

And to make bold lip color last all day: Apply
the color—straight from the tube or w ith a
lip brush—in thin layers, blotting between
each layer with a tissue. Skip lip liner and
forget the perfectly sharp outline (very
early nineties). Instead, once the color is on
lips, diffuse the edges with a clean, dry eye-
shadow brush for a bit of softness. This way
you won’t notice when the crisp line starts
to fade. Freshen up the color in the center as
needed throughout the day (or night)!

The New Laws of Lips

t

o be fair, there are no hard-and-fast “laws” these days, says
Shiseido artistic director Dick Page, who created the spec-
trum of looks on these pages. “I can’t bear the idea that if you’re
doing a strong lip, you can’t wear anything else on the face.
That’s nonsense,” he insists. “You can do whatever the hell you
want!” But he does have a few suggestions for best results:
