Q

I want to start layering more.
So what’s your must-have lay-
ering piece? And how do you wear
it? —Elizabeth, 30, Richmond, Va.

A

I have the free world’s supply
of vests, so that’s my answer.
I wear them under and over coats.
One of the things I love about them
is that if I’m wearing a traditional
look, a Windbreaker-type vest
underneath gives a f lash of color. I
have one that’s orange, and I prob-
ably wouldn’t wear it on its own,
but under a navy coat, it’s a fun
pop. And I love putting a furry vest
under neat h a t a i lored wool coat so
you have just a hint peeking out.
That texture can also look great
under a slick puffer coat. Or wear
your vest over a jacket—I have a col-
larless cropped one that is cute over
a menswear blazer or boxy coat. I
always travel with vests. They’re a
great functional item. The possibil-
ities are endless—I like that.

Q

How can I pull off head-to-
toe “nude” clothes for winter?
—Moy, 24, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

A

When it comes to nude, what’s
vastly important today is how
varied it is. Traditionally, people
have talked about nude as a pale
p e a c h y c o l o r, b u t a s w e a l l k n o w, t h e
world is made up of many colors,

and pulling them together in one
outfit can be beautiful. You can pair
a caramel turtleneck with a choco-
late-brown pea coat. My advice
would be to explore different tones;
don’t think about nude as one color,
or even your color. And all nudes go
well with a touch of gold—try shoes
or a simple bracelet.

Q

For party looks, can you set
the record straight: How
much sparkle is too much sparkle?
—Katelyn, 26, Chicago

A

I must have been hit with the
diamond stick at birth; I’m
so attracted to sparkly things. My
deepest moment of pride was when
Samantha Power, the U. S. amba s-
sador to the United Nations, saw
me in gold sequined pants and
said, “I love those. Could I pull
them off?” I had paired them with
a men’s cashmere sweater, which
made them seem more approach-
able and less glam. So when you’re
wearing sparkle, juxtapose it with
whatever the opposite is. For day,
I’d pair gold pants or a skirt with a
chambray shirt. For evening, I’d put
them with a tux jacket and a white
button-down. And God knows, if
you’re wearing sparkle, the jewelry
needs to come way down! Pick one
place to shine.
