Do store your ring so it can’t be scratched or injured by other jewellery. Diamonds
may be exceptionally hard but other diamonds can damage them. Also, stronger
metals stored with weaker metals may become worn down. Keep your ring in a
jewellery box that has separate compartments, and use a jewellery roll when travelling.
Don’t wear your ring when doing jobs such as cleaning the gutters or
handwashing clothes. Chemicals, such as chlorine, can cause pitting and
discolouration in the setting; and soap just may cause your ring to slip off your finger
and disappear down the drain!
Do take your valuable piece to a jeweller for periodic ‘check-ups’. They will
make sure the stones are still secure, examine for wear and breakages, plus give
your ring a thorough clean.
Don’t handle your ring by the stone — always handle it by the shank (metal).Do check your contents insurance, ideally before picking up the ring from
your jeweller, or as soon as possible. Have the ring independently valued for
insurance purposes and, if necessary, have it covered as an additional item, not as
