KEMPINSKI BARBAROS
BAY, TURKEY
The azure Aegean Sea stretches out to
eternity when you’re perched in a cliff side
villa at the Kempinski Barbaros Bay. This
five star hotel sprawls down to a private
beach on Turkey’s exclusive south eastern
peninsula, near the small seaside town of
Bodrum. The town and its neighbouring
villages are Turkey’s version of the French
Riviera, home year-round to humble
fishermen and a summer holiday hub for
the world’s rich and famous. Madonna
picked up a pair of custom-made leather
sandals from a cobbler in town and
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have docked
their superliner off shore in the past.
European princesses and celebrity
Australian chefs have been known to
occupy pool cabanas at resorts around
town but the guest list at Kempinksi
Barbaros Bay includes Hollywood
heavyweights Sharon Stone, Bruce Willis,
Richard Gere and Liz Hurley. Paparazzi
zoom around on speedboats but they won’t
get anywhere near Kempinski’s infinity pool.
Perched on a plateau, it’s hard to tell where
water, sky and sea meet until you’re
swimming in this football-field sized pool.
The minarets rising out of the pool are a
giveaway; they’re the skylights for the Six
Senses spa below. Looking up while you’re
in the hammam, a traditional Turkish
bath house, and knowing the
pool is above you is a little
daunting, but being scrubbed
clean and soaped down is
worth the discomfort.
Fresh from a bath, your
skin will glow in the
candlelight at dinner — terrace
tables at La Luce Restaurant sit
under the stars, surrounded by
jasmine-covered trellises. They’re perfect
for a private dinner for two.
The breakfast buffet is a little more social.
Order your gözleme, a thin crepe filled with
spinach and cheese, from the elderly ladies
sitting on the floor in front of their hot plates,
pick up a fresh juice and join other guests
out on the balcony, with the bright Aegean
Sea as your backdrop. kempinski.com
