Shared custody. After
feeding at sea, an adult bird
returns to its partner, which
has been minding the pair’s
newly hatched chick.
The waiting game. Once a chick hatches, the adult
albatross broods it, keeping it warm and protected from
predators. After a few weeks, the chick can be left alone
while the adults forage. Rachael (left) gently removes a
GPS tracker from an adult bird; the units weigh about
20g and are taped to the birds’ feathers.
