Sparkling acces-sari
Not everyone has a sari or two going begging in
their wardrobe, but you can pick up these wonders
of silk, embroidery and beads quite cheaply at
markets and on eBay – and look what Bollywood
glamour they bring to your wardrobe and home.
Let’s start with the fashion-accessory side of things
with this glowing orange scarf. All you have to
do for this nifty piece of recycling is to choose the
best part of an old sari, cut it out in a strip and hem
the edges. Done! If you want to carry the theme
through to more outfi ts, then consider edging or
trimming a dress or tunic with other sections of
the cut sari, so you make max use of the garment.
Bling it on!
Any home benefi ts from having a decisive theme,
rather than a hotchpotch of random furnishings.
And this natty piece of upcycling is cheap,
ultra-effective and easy to achieve, bringing the
essence of India to your interior. The beautiful
silk-and-beads sari cushion covers can be mixed
with more restrained Indian cotton prints to fill a
bland settee and set the mood of the subcontinent.
It’s not diffi cult to make a cushion cover without
the need for zippers or buttons. Say, for example,
your pillow is 50 x 50cm, cut a piece of fabric that’s
54 x 135cm. Turn the fabric with the wrong side
out, and fold the fabric with a 15cm overlap at the
rear. Fold the outer edge (when the cover is
inverted) an extra 5cm. Sew the pillow with 2cm
edge of hem, turn it inside out, and you’re done.
