Match another 4^11 ⁄ 2 in marked
square on the other end of the
spot rectangle as before; this time the
marked line should run as shown in
Diagram 3. Sew on the line, trim the
seam and press the white fabric away
from the spot print.

Make a total of four of these
units. Use a rotary cutter and
ruler to trim the cream fabric level
with the bottom edge of the blue spot
rectangles, as shown in Diagram 4.

Pin units to opposite sides
of the 16-patch square with
the base of the blue spot triangles
adjacent to the 16-patch square as
shown in Diagram 5. Stitch the seams.

Press the rectangles outwards
as shown in Diagram 6.

Arrange seven 2^1 ⁄ 2 in print
fabric squares in a pleasing
sequence and sew them together
in a row. (There’s one surplus square.)

Sew a 2^1 ⁄ 2 x14^1 ⁄ 2 in fabric G
sashing strip to the top and
bottom edges of the 16-patch Square-
in-a-Square block. Join the Bluebird
block to the top one and the seven-
square strip to the bottom one to
complete Part 1. It should measure 33^1 ⁄ 2
x14^1 ⁄ 2 in from raw edge to raw edge.
