Use two strands of variegated
green thread to backstitch the
tendrils. Keep the stitches small so
the curves are nice and smooth.

20

Fuse the lightweight interfacing
in the centre of the wrong side
of the two 6^11 ⁄ 2 x12^1 ⁄ 2 in rectangles for
the internal divider. There should be
a^1 ⁄ 4 in margin of fabric at the left and
right edges not covered by interfacing.

21

With right sides together,
match the two rectangles and

sew along both long edges. Turn the
rectangle right side out and press.

22

Smooth the check lining fabric
on the table with right side
down. Lay the rectangle of bag
batting on top and centre the linen
outer bag on top of the batting, right
side facing up. Baste the three layers
together with safety pins or thread.

23

Quilt as desired. Charlotte
machine quilted parallel
diagonal lines 1^1 ⁄ 2 in apart over the
linen background and quilted in
the ditch around the appliqué.

24

Trim the rectangle evenly
around all the sides to
measure 12 x 16^1 ⁄ 2 in.

25

Turn the quilted panel over
so the lining is facing you.
Measure up 6in from the bottom edge
and rule a line across with the chalk
pencil, as shown in Diagram 2.
Centre the divider rectangle from
Step 21 across the pouch with
the lower edge resting on the line

  • it will overhang at the sides. Pin
at the sides to keep it in place.

26

Fold the bottom edge of the
pouch rectangle up over the
divider; fold the top edge down as a
flap to check everything is in the right
place. If the appliqué is obscured by
a fold, adjust the divider placement
and fold positions slightly. Unfold.

27

Sewing with bobbin thread that
matches the linen, machine
stitch^1 ⁄ 8 in from the bottom of the
internal divider through all layers to
secure it in place on the quilted panel.
Baste the sides of the divider to the
pouch; trim the surplus divider fabric
that overhangs the edges level with
the edges of the pouch.

28

Fold the binding strips in half,
long edges matching and
wrong sides together, and press.
There’s no need to join them
together.

29

With raw edges matching,
stitch one piece of binding
to the bottom edge on the linen side
(not the lining side) of the pouch.
(This is the edge that will be under
the fl ap when the pouch is closed.)
Trim the ends level with the sides
of the pouch.

30

Turn the folded edge of this
binding over to the lining side
and hand stitch it in place to cover
the raw edges and the line of
stitching you worked in Step 29.

31

Fold the bottom of the pouch
up on the line you determined
in Step 26 and baste the sides
together through all layers – you
should be working the basting
stitches through two pouch layers
as well as the internal divider.
