Sew the patches in the leaf

columns together, then sew

the columns to the left and right

edges of the stem. Join an A linen

strip the left and right edges

to complete the panel; it should

measure 13 x 8^11 ⁄ 2 in from raw

edge to raw edge.

Repeat Steps 13 and 14

to make a second short

flower stem.

To make the long flower

stem, you will need the

21 ⁄ 2 x15^1 ⁄ 2 in strip of light-value

pink and green print fabric; the

remaining four leaf blocks from

Step 12; three linen G squares;

one linen N rectangle; the linen O

rectangle; and two linen B strips.

Lay out the patches on either side

of the stem, as shown in Diagram 2.

Repeat Step 14 to make the

panel. It should measure 15^1 ⁄ 2

x8^1 ⁄ 2 in from raw edge to raw edge.

Flower petals

Turn 12 E linen rectangles

over, so that they are wrong

side facing up and the 2^1 ⁄ 2 in edges

are horizontal. Use a pencil to make

a light mark^3 ⁄ 4 in up from the

bottom right corner, then draw

a line from the top left corner to

the mark, as shown in Diagram 3.

Pin one of these E

rectangles, right sides

together, with each 4^1 ⁄ 2 in pink

or purple print square cut for

a flower petal, as shown. Stitch

on the line, trim the corner^1 ⁄ 4 in

away from the stitching, turn the

linen triangle over and press.

Repeat Step 18 with the

remaining 12 E linen

rectangles, but this time, draw

the line from the top right corner

to^3 ⁄ 4 in from the bottom left

corner, as shown in Diagram 4.

Pin one of these E rectangles,

right sides together, with

each pink and purple square. Stitch

on the line, trim the corner^1 ⁄ 4 in

away from the stitching, turn the

linen triangle over and press.

Trim all of the petals blocks

to 4^1 ⁄ 2 in square with a^1 ⁄ 4 in

above the point where the linen

triangles cross. See Diagram 5.

Draw a light diagonal

pencil line on the wrong

side of all of the 1^1 ⁄ 2 in squares

cut from purple print fabric. Pin

a square on each petal, as shown

in Diagram 6. Stitch on the line,

trim the corner^1 ⁄ 4 in away from

the stitch, turn the purple triangle

over and press.

Lay out the petals made

from each of the three

different fabrics in two rows of

two units, as shown in the Petal

Layout Diagram. Sew the units

in each row together, then sew

the rows together, carefully

matching seams. Your petals

should measure 8^1 ⁄ 2 in square

from raw edge to raw edge.

block to the top edge
