29
Trim each square to measure
precisely 3in with the seam
line running through two corners.
30
Arrange the pieced squares
in a row, all orientated the
same way. Sew them together. Press.
Your row of grass should measure
3x35^11 ⁄ 2 in from raw edge to raw edge.
Sew it to the bottom edge of the
flower panel. Press.
Butterfly
31
Repeat Step 28 to make two
pieced squares from the linen
J square and the purple print 6in
square. Trim them to measure
precisely 5^1 ⁄ 2 in. These are the
butterfly’s upper wings.
32
Use the same method with
three linen I squares and three
31 ⁄ 2 in squares of pink print fabric.
Trim them to measure precisely 3in.
33
Lay out the units from Steps
31 and 32 and the 3in squares
cut from pink and white print fabric
in three rows, as shown in the
Butterfly Block Layout Diagram.
34
Sew the units in each row
together, then sew the rows
together, carefully matching seams.
Press. Your block should measure
101 ⁄ 2 in square, raw edge to raw edge.
Assembly
35
Lay out the flower+grass
panel, the butterfly block
and the strips cut from linen for the
background as shown in the Quilt
Layout Diagram.
36
Join strips to the left and right
edges of the butterfly block.
Jemima recommends pressing these
seams open.
37
Join the P linen strip to the
top edge of the butterfly panel,
and the K linen strip to its bottom
edge. Join the butterfly and flower
panels together to complete the
assembly of the quilt top.
38
Draw antennae for the
butterfly and backstitch
them in purple thread.
Finishing
39
The quilt top, batting and
backing are ready to take
to a long-arm quilter as they are.
If you’re going to do the quilting
yourself, smooth the backing fabric
on the floor, right side down, and
secure it with masking tape. Lay the
batting on top, ensuring it is smooth.
After pressing the quilt top, lay it on
top of the batting, right side facing
up. Baste the three layers together
with thread or safety pins.

SELECTION TIPUse a
variety of different fabrics in your
project to create interest. You could
mix fabrics with different textures,
for example. Cotton, linen and
lawns all work well together.
