From turf to surf. Bushwalkers and
birders can easily find time out for a
dip in Lord Howe’s superb lagoon,
much of which is 1–3m in depth.
Erscotts Hole (far right), 800m from
shore, is easily reached in a glass-
bottomed boat and is a favoured
spot for snorkelling. Kayaks (right)
are a great way to explore, and reach
other snorkelling spots, such as
Comets Hole. Surge wrasse (above)
come in for a feed at Neds Beach.

Hidden heights. Mt Lidgbird
cloaked in cloud. Lidgbird is
rugged and inaccessible,
with no marked track to the
summit, although islanders
know of some routes.
