Try a simpler backdrop
This was taken at a vintage car display held
at the World War Two Igloo at Rocky Creek
on the Atherton Tablelands in Far North
Queensland. According to Trevor Duncan:
“It was a very sunny day so I had to use the
f lash at half power to override some of the
shadows without losing them altogether. I have
been experimenting in Photoshop with doing
a one shot HDR to bring out the detail without
introducing any grain and then turning it
black and white. This shot has been cropped to
8x10 to remove some of the foliage above the
building which was a bit distracting and a light
vignette was added to fit into the theme.”
I love the building and I love the car, but
have serious reservations about putting the two
together. It just gets too busy. The foliage is
an unwanted distraction but the background
building is serious competition for the viewer’s
attention also. Add the f lash, even at half-
power, and there is an awful lot to look at.
The car would have benefitted with a much
cleaner and simpler backdrop, which clearly
wasn’t possible from this angle. You could blur
the background in Photoshop but I think that
even half f lash was overkill for this situation
and subject. Those shadows hardly rate as
shadows, being so weak.
SAIMA’S TIP: Good shadows add depth or
three-dimensionality to an image and help
create mood and atmosphere.
