SONUS FABER
SONUS FABER
IL CREMONESE
Italian manufacturer Sonus faber has added a new loudspeaker to its
‘Homage Collection’, a three-and-a-half-way fl oor-stander called ‘Il
Cremonese.’ The name of the speaker is homage to one of Antonio
Stradivari’s most famous violins: a 300-year-old instrument now
called ‘Il Cremonese’ (it was originally named Joachim, for its fi rst
owner.) The Il Cremonese loudspeaker incorporates many Sonus faber
technologies, including its ‘Stealth Refl ex System’ which employs two
orthogonally-shaped ports: one on the back for the midwoofer, and
the other on the base, facing the fl oor, for the bass drivers and its ‘Zero
Vibration Transmission’ decoupling system which uses elastomers to
decouple the cabinet from the fl oor.
The tweeter is the H28 XTR-04, which uses Sonus faber’s ‘Arrow
Point’ damped-apex 28mm dome, a neodymium motor system and
an acoustic labyrinth rear chamber made from wood. The midrange
driver is the M18 XTR-04, a Sonus faber-designed 180mm-diameter
driver with a cone made from a blend of cellulose pulp, kapok, kenaf
and other natural fi bres that is air-dried and not pressed before being
surface-damped. The driver’s neodymium magnet system incorporates
triple Kellog/Goeller rings. The woofers are scaled-down versions of
those used in the Lilium, and are 180mm in diameter with sandwich
construction cones (two outer skins of cellulose pulp constrain a
core of syntactic foam). The Il Cremonese also uses two W22XTR-
220mm-diameter low-frequency drivers that Sonus faber calls ‘in-
frawoofers’ and says ‘are a new project from the Arcugnano factory’ which
are also of sandwich cone construction but are driven by 50-mm
diameter voice coils. The result is a rated frequency response of 25Hz
to 35kHz ±3dB, sensitivity of 92dBSPL at one
metre (2.83V input) and a nominal imped-
ance of 8Ω.
The Il Cremo-
nese cabinet has
fi ve sides, in what
Sonus faber calls a
‘rhomboidal diamond
design’ and measures
1449×398×622mm
(HWD). Lacquered
walnut, tempered
glass, leather and
brushed black alumin-
ium are amongst the
materials used to build
the cabinet which,
like all Sonus faber’s
speakers, is available in
both red and walnut
fi nishes. Available in
Australia now, the So-
nus faber II Cremonese
sell for $64,999 (RRP)
per pair.
