WHAT NOT TO DO

THERE ARE ALSO SOME POSTS THAT COULD LAND
YOU SQUARELY IN THE ‘DO NOT HIRE’ PILE.

SWEARING: “Cursing, racist and defamatory
comments are definitely not on. We want employees
who treat customers and colleagues with respect,
and people who we can trust in the store.” Jo

BEING RUDE: “Negative commentary on any
posts is a big red flag! At Supré, we don’t support
negative comments or language – we much prefer
to use something more uplifting to embrace our
ongoing ‘Girl Gang’ message.” Nicole

ACTING UP IN PHOTOS: “Suggestive and
inappropriate images don’t give me a positive
vibe and often send the wrong message.” Jo

LOOKING MOODY AND DIFFICULT: “We look
for images of girls having fun with friends and family,
or images that show an insight into her interests,
rather than unfriendly-looking selfies.” Nicole

“This Instagrammer
looks like she has a keen
interest in the fashion
industry, something we
look upon favourably
when hiring.” Nicole

“Her interest in fashion
is a great asset, as she
would love working
with our products and
seeing the new trends
come in-store.” Jo

“She seems to be looking for
the beauty in things – her travels,
her food, her friends – which
is something we really admire.
A positive attitude and outlook is
something we always encourage in
our teams at Cotton On Group.” Jo

“I really like her Instagram profile.
It shows a creative individual who
enjoys sharing memorable moments
with her close friends.” Jo

A picture really can tell a thousand words.
That’s why potential employers have started using
social media to screen candidates, like the one
pictured here. “With limited information and without
a résumé to accompany her personal profile,
the pics show someone who seems adventurous,
happy and friendly – qualities we look for,” says
Nicole. “Her Instagram includes snaps of her
travels, moments with her girlfriends, as
well as a genuine interest in fashion. I would
definitely be interested in hearing more from her,
pending the sighting of a CV, of course.”
Most employers will be looking for a ‘good fit’
with their team and the company’s values. “We look
for individuals who reflect our six values: fun,
entrepreneurial, keeping it real, engaged, ethical
and family,” says Jo. You never know what kinds of
opportunities can come from your casual after-
school job. Showing your best self on social media
could be the first step in the right direction for your
future career! “Some of our senior managers started
with us as casual sales assistants,” Jo says. “Through
hard work, dedication and love for our values, they
have thrived – and so have their careers.” b
