22 MUSCLE & FITNESS JUNE 2016
AS THE WEATHER STARTS
to cool and the idea of getting out
of bed at 6am for a run is far less
attractive than staying warm under
the covers, the training you do may
alter. And as your workout routine
changes, so you need to change what
you do to take care of your skin as the
temperature outside turns nippy.
During the summer months the air
is warm and humidity levels are high,
but this dramatically change once
the cold snap hits. The air is drier and
your skin is drier. To keep your skin
looking healthy and hydrated in colder
weather, make these simple changes:
CHANGE YOUR CLEANSER
Summer workouts often lead to
breakouts caused by a combination
of sweat, dirt and bacteria building
up on your face. Using a foaming
cleanser and scrub-based formula
to whisk away oils and dirt can help
prevent problems. But winter skin
requires a more gentle approach –
as much as you want clean skin, you
don’twanttoremovemuch-needed
oils and moisture which maintain
hydration. Choosing a less aggressive
option like a creme cleanser will allow
you to cleanse without removing
lipid barrier oils that allow your skin
to maintain a healthy pH balance in
winter. Cleansing without stripping
oils allows your skin to remain soft.
In fact, removing those oils can
signal your skin to produce more
to compensate, actually increasing
chances of a breakout. Try Sukin
Cream Cleanser. (sukinorganics.com).
INTRODUCE FACE OILS
Moisturisers are not always enough
to keep skin happy in cold weather.
The idea of an oil being applied to
parched skin seems the perfect
solution but for some with acne-
prone or oily skin, oils may seem
like a no-go. But the right oils are
actually very good for all skin types
and should be used in winter to
hydrate skin sufering from the
cold. Of course, some oils are just
downright bad for skin, but the
right combination of essential and
calming oils can really boost skin
nourishment. Applying a moisturiser
after cleansing and then a small
amount of face oil on top can give
skin the boost it needs. Coconut oil
in small quantities can be fantastic
but if you’re looking for something
really efective try People For
Plants Face Oil which will soothe,
hydrate and replenish all skin types
(peopleforplants.com.au).
LEARN THE TRIGGERS
THAT IRRITATE SKIN
A lot of people in winter months
sufer from rosacea. It’s a condition
where the blood vessels in the
face are enlarged, giving the face
a reddened flush and at times a
dry and flaky surface. Rosacea is
a common problem for both men
and women, but can be managed
efectively with the right treatment.
The condition can be managed by
understanding the triggers that
can cause a flare-up. Too much
alcohol, extreme temperatures
in cold weather, indoor heating
and lack of moisture in the air are
some the big ofender. My best tip
is to nourish and repair your skin
with the right antioxidants and a
good skincare serum. Niacinamide
is a great antioxidant
to combat and
strengthen – look for
it in skincare serums
like Olay Regenerist
(chemistware
house.com).
