FACE-FOLIATION
Nothing brightens and energises post-
winter skin like a good ol’ slough. Oust
blackheads with products such as
Cosmedix Purity Detox Scrub, $48,
advancedskintechnology.com.au, which
contains salicylic acid to accelerate cell
turnover, helping to unclog your pores.
Choose over-the-counter products with
salicylic acid concentrations between
.5 and 2 per cent and layer, starting
with a cleanser before applying a spot
treatment to any blemishes. When
showering, treat your body to an
invigorating, deliciously scented scrub of
fresh coffee grounds, coconut oil, brown sugar
and a spoonful of cinnamon. We love C LAB
& CO Coffee Scrub, $25, priceline.com.au.
The caffeine is said to be good for stimulating
circulation and busting cellulite.
The best time to exfoliate any
part of your body is in the
morning after skin has completed
its self-repair cycle. To exfoliate
your pout, use a mixture of equal
parts brown sugar, honey and
extra virgin olive oil to remove dead, flaky skin
and smooth out chapped lips.
CHOOSE
YOUR HUE
While you want
your body and face
to match, generally you’ll want a
lighter shade on your face than your
body (if in doubt, go paler). You can
always reapply to build the colour.

SLOUGH
Exfoliate with a mild organic or
all-natural oil-free facial cleanser the
day before tanning. Gently scrubbing
skin will smooth its texture and
remove dead skin cells. Don’t be
tempted to use a body exfoliator,
which is made for thicker skin and
may contain oil. In the morning,
refresh your face with your go-to
face wash (assuming it doesn’t
contain oils).

PROTECT
Use moisturiser to protect
your eyes and hairline. To avoid
visible lines, dab body lotion on

your eyebrows as tan
can get build up and
give your secret away.

LIGHT UP
On your face, the tiniest slip will
be obvious, so apply tan in natural
lighting with a large mirror (most
bathrooms are deceptively dim).

LAYER
Whether you’re using a cream
or mousse, spread the tan with
fingertips using quick, small circular
motions, which will spread it before
it’s absorbed. Blend as you go for
even coverage. To prevent stained
hands, wash your hands thoroughly
as soon as you’ve finished.

MAINTAIN
To maintain your tan, moisturise
morning and night and avoid heavy-
duty products. For work and drinks,
you can take the look from bronzed
girl next door to glam using a skin
illuminator or bronzing powder.

face cheat
You know working out in a full face of make-
up will come back to bite you in the form of
breakouts. If you’re not ready to fully embrace
the barefaced trend, meet halfway with
a natural-looking fake tan. We asked
the pros at St Tropez how to apply
without streaks, patches or
breakouts.
