eing fit and healthy should be our primary concern when we
hit the gym, but overlooking our body composition or aesthetic
goals is like ignoring the fly in the ointment.
“Whether you wish to lose weight, tone up, get fit, be healthy
or look your absolute best, it comes down to improvements in body
composition,” says director of MP Studio Luke Archer (mpstudio.com.
au). “Most people want to decrease body fat and increase, or at least
maintain, muscle mass.”
A simple enough goal but one that takes a complex set of conditions
to achieve. Common science folk law quotes muscle hypertrophy as
requiring a calorie surplus along with heavy lifts, while fat loss requires
a calorie deficit along with copious cardio.
Given their opposing training and nutrition tactics, how can you
achieve both in time for summer? We ask the experts.
