Speaking through an
interpreter, Tayeba revealed
that she was terrified her
family would be sent back
to Turkey. For now, they are
together and safe in a
refugee camp in northern
Greece. “I am so happy these
people were on the beach
when we arrived. It doesn’t
matter to me if they are an
Israeli organisation. I’m just
happy someone is helping
my family survive this.”
Hagit Krakov, the head
of disaster management for
IsraAID, says such stories
symbolise a move beyond
historical antagonism:
“There’s a complete role
reversal. These people are
running away from those
who are supposed to
represent them and defend
them – and they’re running
into the arms of those who
represent their biggest
enemy. We say to them,
‘I want to help you and
I’m going to help you.’”
For Gold, who admits
she left the island to return
to Sydney with a heavy
heart, the experience
has been life-changing.
“Most Israelis and Arabs
believe the hostility between
their people is inescapable
and unsolvable. But not
on this beach ... Arabs and
Israelis are not at war here.
Syrians and Israelis are not
at war here. Here, they kiss
and hug. Here in the midst
of chaos and suffering,
enemies no longer exist.”

ZAMBIA

When Julianne Moore
stepped onto the red
carpet at the Cannes
Film Festival this May,
a pair of stunning gems
adorned her ears. Though
not the most elaborate
jewels the Oscar-winner
has worn in her career,
they are the most
remarkable: they are
the world’s first certified
ethical, sustainable and
eco-friendly emeralds.
It isn’t the first time
Swiss fine jewellery house
Chopard has produced a
set of sustainable luxury
pieces. The company has
been working with Green
Carpet Challenge – the
organisation set up by Livia
Firth, activist wife of actor
Colin – since 2013, creating
pieces using Fairmined
gold and ethically produced
diamonds and opals.
Unlike the diamond
industry, which established

a tracking system after the
“blood diamond” scandal
revealed that the sale of
these stones was funding
mercenaries in Angola and
Sierra Leone, no such
ethical guidelines exist
for coloured gems. The
emerald industry is
notorious for treacherous
mining conditions, many
of which also denude the
environments in which
the gems are found.
Chopard’s jewels,
procured in collaboration
with mining company

Gemfields, can be tracked
from the moment they are
responsibly mined in
Zambia up until they are
set by Chopard’s jewellers
in Switzerland. “The whole
chain from A to Z must
be transparent,” Caroline
Scheufele, Chopard’s
co-president has said.
“So we can really follow
the stones from the mine
to the red carpet — in this
case on Julianne’s ears.”
“Simply wearing
jewellery is a luxury, but
knowing the stones and
gold have been ethically
sourced and mined makes
the experience truly
valuable,” Moore said
before her glamorous
Cannes entrance. And
now, the pieces will be
available for purchase
at Chopard’s new Sydney
flagship, opening this
month. There’s never been
a better time to go green.
