“Start painting slightly back from
the cuticle, then flare out the brush
on one side, and then the other.
Apply two even coats and finish
with a sweep across the nail tip”
- Alison Bowhill-Hayes, Sally Hansen nail expert

HOW-TO
MANI
PEDI
Nai l an
at-home
TRY THIS:
Keep your non-
dominant hand
steady (lean it
against something
or prop it up
on a book) and
manoeuvre your
dominant hand
around the nail
polish brush.
FILE IN: ONE
DIRECTION
“This prevents the nails’ free
edge getting frayed, reduces
splitting and protects the health
and integrity of the nail,” says
Sally Hansen nail expert Alison
Bowhill-Hayes. Try Sephora
Glass Nail File, $11.
CUT IT OUT
“Please don’t cut your cuticles;
this is live skin that protects the
matrix where new keratin cells
are created which forms the nail
plate,” explains Bowhill-Hayes.
Continually removing cuticles
leaves the nail bed exposed to
potential bacteria; instead,
gently push them back with
your own nails or an orange stick.
ROLL
WITH IT
For a smooth paint job, ensure
your polish is in good condition
(not lumpy or thick). Nail expert
Alison Bowhill-Hayes also
suggests “you don’t shake the
bottle as this can cause bubbles
or streaks; instead, roll it in the
palm of your hands for one
minute prior to painting”.
ENOUGH
WITH THE
BUFF!
Nail buffing should only be
done every couple weeks –
any sooner and you can
weaken the nail bed, which
could lead to flaking. Try Scholl
Velvet Smooth Electronic
Nail Care System, $59.95.
