yellow in winter.
n Jacaranda

n Camellia japonica

hybrids. And for
a flowering hedge,
nothing beats
Camellia sasanqua.
n Deciduous
magnolias. Any
of them make
for gorgeous
colour in winter.
n Frangipanis, for
perfume and colour.
n Hibiscus,
especially the single
varieties and the
new year-round
blooming hybrids.

Design ideas for you

n Decide on a colour theme which blends
foliage and flower tones harmoniously.
n Emphasise the seasons by including
a range of annual and perennial flowers.
n Grow orchids or night-flowering cactus
like Epiphyllum species on bare frangipani
stems to create year-round interest.
n Make garden beds deep (up to 2.5m)
to allow dynamic plantings of shrubs,
small trees and groundcovers.
n Avoid straight lines. Consider including
a circular lawn and curved garden beds to
add interest and dimension to your garden.
