Here is just what I came up with for a Bill of Materials...so called 1" thick material is really 3/4" in thickness,
so I needed to do dimensions etc by using 3/4".

PLANT A LITTLE
SUCCULENT ROOFTOP
Please the birds and the
succulent lovers with a
garden-topped bird feeder!
Gather your supplies
■ Wooden bird feeder or
letterbox (see left)
■ Cacti and succulents
potting mix
■ Variety of succulents
You’ll also need
Trowel; birdseed mix
Here’s how
STEP 1 Place roof of feeder
on a level work surface,
such as grass lawn, Dampen
potting mix then spread a
2–3cm layer on roof using
trowel. Press down firmly.
STEP 2 Remove a succulent
from plastic container, gently
loosening soil around roots.
Discard excess soil.
Tip Preserve as many roots
as possible, keeping some soil
attached, to ensure roots take
to new location without too
much transplanting shock.
STEP 3 Starting at 1 corner of
roof gutter, position succulent
and dig into potting mix to
make room for root ball.
STEP 4 Repeat Steps 2
and 3 to cover entire
roof with succulents.
Note Succulents are slow-
growing, so you can plant
them very close together.
STEP 5 Spread birdseed
in base of bird feeder.
STEP 6 Set roof in place.
STEP 7 Leave for about
3 days before watering to
allow roots to take hold.
Note This helps to prevent
soil-borne diseases from
entering the root system.

BUILD YOUR FEEDER
You can adapt this project
to a bird feeder or letterbox
you already have, or build
this design with removable
roof (see diagram, above):
■ Use 19mm exterior
plywood for all pieces
(except post – use treated
pine) and exterior PVA glue
to join pieces together.
■ Make a 30° cut on 1 long
edge of each side, 1 long
edge of each roof, and 1
short edge of each roof lip.
■ Use 50mm galvanised
screws to join pieces,
predrilling and countersinking
for each screw. Cover
holes with wood filler.
■ Drill 6mm drainage holes
through long sides of roof
at roof gutter ends.
■ Paint bird feeder with
2 coats exterior paint.
■ Screw feeder assembly to
post set 800mm into ground.
