sitting on a pillow or folded towel. Use the last 30
seconds to go deeper by reaching your hands out
to the floor in front of you and dipping your head.

Is the paleo
diet bad for
women?
E PBOX
Ask any paleo
follower why
they eat paleo
and you’ll receive
a barrage of
testimonials
about how they
feel amazing,
slimmer and
have essentially
revolutionised
life as they knew
it. Paleo diets
exclude grains
and dairy, but
there just isn’t
the scientific
evidence to
support this
approach as
a healthy move.
Yes, if you have
coeliac disease
or a diagnosed
allergy or
intolerance, you
should tailor
your diet, but for
most of us this
isn’t the case.
The symptoms
reported in the
study may be
caused by
paleo’s exclusion
of food groups.
Whole grains are
rich in fibre and
B-vitamins
important for
digestive

A RECENT STUDY BY EDITH COWAN
UNIVERSITY FOUND THAT WOMEN
WHO ATE A PALEO DIET HAD HIGHER
RATES OF TIREDNESS, TROUBLE
SLEEPING AND DIARRHOEA. SHOULD
WE DITCH THE IDEA THAT PALEO IS
A GOOD HEALTH MOVE? YES, SAYS
WH NUTRITION EXPERT KRISTEN BECK
(hence, fatigue).
Dairy contains
tryptophan – an
amino acid your
body uses to
make sleep-
inducing
compounds
serotonin and
melatonin.
Cutting out dairy
can potentially
upset your sleep.
Admittedly,
the study was
small and short-
term but it’s one
of the first that
puts paleo to
the test. Until
now all we’ve
had is opinion,
unsubstantiated
c l a i m s a n d h y p e.
Bottom line:
for most of
us, any health
benefits of
‘going paleo’
have nothing to
do with cutting
whole grains
and dairy from
your diet, and
everything to do
with eating more
fresh vegies, fruit
and high-quality
meats and fish.
And cutting
out processed,
refined, sugary
foods and carbs.
But you don’t
need to go
paleo to do that.
