check the numbers. Grab
a dryer that’s at least 1,800
watts, says Stacey Guerra,
a senior stylist at Butterf ly
Studio Salon in Manhattan. It
packs more power, driving hair
more forcefully in the direction
you want: up.

“It strategically blows roots
upward.”

rough-Dry First. “A f t e r
towel-drying, dry your hair
using only your hands and a
blow-dryer until it’s 50 percent
dry,” says Guerra. This creates
a lot of natural volume and
texture, putting you at an
advantage.

get the right brush.
Flat brushes can’t grip and lift
the hair at roots as easily as
round brushes. Wes Sharpton,
a stylist at Hairstory in
Manhattan, recommends
one by Spornette (right). Just
be gentle, he says: “Too much
tension and you’ll end up
stretching the strands, blowing
out their natural elasticity and
volume.”

Don’t touch! Post blow-
dry, keep your hands off your
hair. “Their natural oils can
cause strands to fall f lat,” says
Guerra.

Gareth Bromell,
stylist at Mèche in

stick to volumising
formulas.

root raiser
Prep the damp, front

with a root lifter before
wrapping
it around a three-inch
roller (toward your
scalp), then
go to sleep, says
Riawna Capri, celebrity
hairstylist and co-

salon: “When you wake
up, the front of your
hair is dry with tons of
volume—and
no heat damage!”

Prep roots with
volumising spray before
blow-drying. Once hair
is dried, gather in a
topknot, and double-
wrap with a scrunchie
(an elastic will leave
a dent), says Orlando
Pita, a New York City
stylist. “This sets the
roots in an upward
position all night,” he
says. “Take it down in
the morning for natural-
looking volume.”

Overdirecting 101
The industry term for blowing hair firmly in one direction—only to flip it to the opposite side for the
actual style. “it’s the secret to major volume,” says sharpton. “roots are so ‘overdirected’
one way that flipping them creates a springboard effect.” So if you want to part your hair to the
right side, drastically part it to the left and blow-dry (or vice versa), pulling roots upward, then flip.
