SOME OF MY BEST PRODUCTS
WERE CREATED BY MISTAKE.
Touche Éclat was a duplicate of
what I was applying as a makeup
artist – a drop of light foundation
and moisturiser blended on my
hand. When I was heading up
development at Yves Saint Laurent,
I got a sample in the wrong
wand. It was meant to have
a sponge on it but it came with
a brush. It took me three years
to convince them to launch it.
Baume De Rose was similar.
Someone in the lab measured
the quantities wrong and
doubled the ingredients.
I saw it and just knew. It’s the
Rolls-Royce of lip balms and
is expensive because of the
cost of the ingredients, but it’s
been incredibly successful.

FLAWLESS FOUNDATION
COMES DOWN TO HOW YOU
APPLY IT. A lot of women
apply it like a cream, but it’s
not. And they use too much
or too little. Blend foundation
just where you need it and
use a brush. If you just blanket
cover, the face ends up flat.

DON’T USE BRONZER AND BLUSH
INTERCHANGEABLY. Bronzer gives
you the colour of a tan but not the
healthy glow blush can. As you get
older, it’s important to add colour
selectively, because you lose it. You
should also wear mascara on the
top lashes to open eyes up. And
giving your brows structure gives
architecture to your whole face.

I HAVE VERY LITTLE FROM
OTHER BEAUTY BRANDS. I use
my own, and if I want something,
I just make it. But I always use

Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse; it’s an
all-in-one oil – for hair, body and
even the bathtub. And Guerlain’s
Terracotta bronzer, which was
developed by my friend Dominique
Szabo. It gives the perfect bronze.

I CREATE MAKEUP FOR YOU, BUT
FRAGRANCE FOR ME. Right now,
I’m wearing Thé Glacé. It’s based
on the recipe for iced tea I make at
home in Provence. Black tea from
Mauritius, verbena from my garden,
citrus, a bit of patchouli, almond,
lavender and a hint of musk to make
it long-lasting. Scent is about finding
what feels most “you”.

FRENCH WOMEN ARE BEAUTIFUL
BECAUSE THEY’RE REBELLIOUS.
They don’t follow trends at all.
They’re about eye makeup and not
much else. English beauty is about
trying crazy things. Americans
like rules and a routine. Australian
beauty is about optimism – beautiful
skin, lashes and lipstick but not a lot
of eye shadow.

MY BEST ADVICE IS THE SAME
I  GIVE MY DAUGHTER. I say to
cultivate style before being a fashion
victim. And to take care of your
skin from a young age. Protection
from the sun is fundamental, but
so is deeply cleaning skin. Don’t
grab anti-ageing products before
you need them. And wear makeup,
but not too much.

WHEN YOU FEEL DOWN, WEAR
LIPSTICK. It’s like a pair of heels –
it gives you attitude. Red lipstick is
the best. You can’t stay in a bad mood
wearing it. It’s the same as how you
walk differently in heels compared to
Nikes – walking in a more feminine
way becomes automatic. q

The French-born
makeup artist and
product pioneer (she’s
behind YSL’s iconic
Touche Éclat) was
studying medicine,
then art, before she
decided on beauty.
It’s that expertise that
has influenced her
much-heralded
namesake brand
