“I started poetry when I was
young,” explains Coyle-Larner, his
speech soft and fast. “Rapping came
offthebackofthat.Alotofpeople
diditatschool,someleft it behind,
Igotstuckwithit.”
Coyle-Larner credits his drama
school background and mother for
hisloveoflanguage.“Ilovethe
way Shakespeare used words. It’s
somethingIgetfromMum,”he
says.“Shewasintoactingandwords,
andhowtheycanbeputtogetherto
move people in ways that I can’t be
explained, really.”
AmajorpartoftheLoyle-Carner
storystemsfromtheartist’sADHD
anddyslexicdiagnosis,frombeing
the misunderstood kid to dealing
with that through creative writing,
to his current side-hustle, running
cookingclassesforkidswithADHD
outofaLondonkitchen.
“Beingdyslexic,Istruggledwith
writing critically, but I could always
writecreatively,”hesays.“With
creative writing, you’re not judged
asmuchonspellingorformor
structure;anymistakesalmostadd
tothepoem.Itwaskindofmylittle
placewhereIcouldgetaway and
colour outside the lines.”
Yes te rd ay’s G o nepaints a full
portrait of the artist. He talks
aboutlifeandfamily,withhis
mothermakingaspoken-word
cameo. To him, it sounds like
home, his rhymes focusing on
vulnerability over bravado. “It’s
asnapshotofwhatit’slikebe20
in London; the depressors, the
positives, the negatives,” he explains.
“[WhenIstartedout]Iwas
making music for myself and for
friendswhowouldlistentoit.They
knowmeandknowwhatI’mliving
for. It was nowhere near the kind of
Great Gatsbylifestylepeopleassume
youhaveasarapper.Alotofmy
favouriterecordsarebyartistssuch
asMosDef,whohaveshownthatit’s
