When Hank Azaria was a kid, he came up

with what he calls his “generic baseball

announcer voice.” “I mimicked everything ff

the TV from a young age,” says the actor, 52,

famed for an eclectic galaxy ofSimpsons

voices (Moe, Apu and Chief Wiggum, to

name a few) and other eccentric characters.

His latest, Jim Brockmire, is a hapless

sportscaster based on that early creation.

“This guy always sounds like he’s calling a

ball game, whether he’s drunk or dirty-talking

in bed,” says Azaria. First aFunny or Dieskit,

Brockmire is now the star of his own bawdy

IFC series. “We couldn’t have done this show

five years ago,” says Azaria. “I’m a huge fan

of the golden era of TV and the creative
