OUT & ABOUT

Dinner date

Launceston Place head chef
Ben Murphy loves a spot of
late-night trifl e-ing

Where – or how – do you most
like to kick off a big night out?
I’ve never been a big drinker, but I
do love live music. I recently went
to see Drake, who was incredible,
and I’m looking forward to
checking out The Weeknd too.

What’s your favourite restaurant
when you’re chilling out?
Pizza East in Shoreditch. The
pizza is great, no messing
around. I cook complex food at
Launceston Place, but I tend to
seek comfort food elsewhere.

What’s your ideal night in?
An Indian takeaway. I’m lucky
enough to have the perfect local;
The Coriander in Buckhurst Hill.
I have a chicken korma and go
mad for poppadoms and raita.

And your perfect nightcap?
Hot chocolate with a cherry
Bakewell – it's quintessentially
British and has to be my favourite
treat after a busy shift.

Late-night fridge-raid?
I’ve been a fan of strawberry
trifl e since childhood. I fi nally
taught my girlfriend how to eat it
properly: layer by layer. Custard is
defi nitely the winner – although
there never seems to be enough!

BLUE SKYE THINKING

HESTON
NEW-MENTHAL
The chef’s gastropub, the Hinds
Head in Bray, has just had a
smart refurb. Fabled Studio’s
design nods to the Grade II-listed
building’s historic incarnations
as a hunting lodge and coaching
inn. A glass-walled private cellar
holds Isa Bal’s extended wine
collection, which joins Heston’s
ever-inventive menus.

Want a place at Skye Gyngell’s TABLE? From
17-21 May, the chef's so-named ‘community eating
house’ at Somerset House will tackle food waste. A
three-course ‘scratch menu’ (£20) makes ingenious use
of seasonal produce scraps. somersethouse.org.uk
