Step 8 – placement of lion leaves Step 9
Assembly
10
Press the completed appliqué
block. Centre the template you
made in Part 1 over it – check that
there is an equal amount of fabric
overhanging the left and right edges.
Trace around all four edges and trim
the block on the traced line.
11
With right sides together, sew
the magenta K fabric café-
umbrella shape to the top of the
appliqué block and press the seam
towards the smaller shape.
Border 1
12
Fold the 2in white Border 1
strip in half, short edges
matching, and finger press a crease
to mark its centre. Unfold. Make
a light pencil mark in the seam
allowance of the bottom edge in the
centre crease. Pin the top edge of the
strip to the bottom of the block with
an equal amount overhanging at
each end. Sew this seam and press
it outwards.
Border 2
13
Arrange the trimmed half-
square triangle units in pairs
with one grey and one black triangle
in each. Match the pairs, right sides
together, and join them along the grey/
black edges. Press the seams open.
14
Join the pairs of units side by
side with the triangles facing
the same way and press the seams
open. Sew a coloured 3in square to
each end of the pieced border.
15
Pin the pieced border strip to
the bottom edge of Border 1:
the base of the grey and black
triangles should be next to the white
strip and the centre seam in the
pieced border should match the
pencil mark you made on the white
strip in Step 12. Sew the seam and
press it towards Border 1.
16
Press the block flat, then use
a quilter’s ruler and rotary
cutter to trim the ends of the border
strip at an angle in line with the
edges of the block.
Quilting
17
Lay the finished block on the
cotton batting and cut the
batting out about 1^11 ⁄ 2 in by eye outside
the edges of the block. Pin the block
to the batting, making sure the
edges, appliqué and seam areas
are especially secure.
18
Fit a walking foot and set the
stitch length to 3 (about eight
stitches per inch). Begin by stay
stitching right around the block
(^1) ⁄ 8 in from the edges.
19
Using white thread, stitch
in the ditch of the seams
of Border 1 and the café umbrella.
Claire and Jemima then switched
to clear monofi lament thread and
a free-motion foot to outline quilt
all the appliqué shapes on the
panel. Rule random parallel lines
over the background fabric and
8
Fuse the leaf appliqué shapes
to two of the felt pieces, referring
to the photographs as guides to
placement. Appliqué them to the felt
with matching green threads and
machined blanket stitch.
9
Layer each appliquéd felt shape
on top of the matching piece of
felt. Sew a line of white straight
stitch just outside the outer edge of
each group of leaves. Cut away the
excess felt just outside the stitching
line with pinking shears. Cut the V
shapes in the leaves with scissors.
