Words by Paul Sephton

I

’m doing my usual
routine, and
there’s this guy on
a stationary bike
next to me. I swear
to God his body has
some kind of sluice
or slipway; sweat
has never left
someone with
such enthusiasm – like it’s
trying to escape his body
with Shawshank Redemption
levels of commitment. Such

is gym, right? We endure weight dropping, grunting, sweat
waterfalls and narcissism hives for the greater good of a healthy
body with which to forklift those 2am pizza slices into our mouths.
Now, while the pizza slices won’t change, the g yms and health
clubs are. Resilient to all nature of exercise fads, the health club
stands the test of time, and is now getting a serious upgrade.
Leading the pack is Virgin Active’s Classic Collection, most
recently unveiled at Cape Town’s Silo District (read: shit hot
trend spot).
So what’s diferent about a Classic Collection Club? Well
everything. he curation behind the Silo District health and
wellness space rivals the neighbouring Zeitz Museum of
Contemporary Art Africa (due to open in September).
