£6.6m in 2015-16. Hoyle chairs the Works discount book chain

Luxury brands including the French crystal, jewellery and
fragrance house Lalique are among those owned by Swiss-born
Denz, 60, who runs his main company from Twickenham. A wine
lover, he also has the Château Faugères vineyard and collects art.
He recently converted the glass designer René Lalique’s former

resigned as Tory MP for Richmond Park in protest at plans to
expand Heathrow. He stood as an independent in the by-election
but lost to the Liberal Democrats. Goldsmith, 42, published tax
returns while an MP showing £10m of income and capital gains
since 2010. His late father, Sir James Goldsmith, left £1.2bn in trust ,
with a quarter going to Zac, his mother, Lady Annabel, 82, brother
Ben, 36, and sister Jemima, 43. Goldsmith’s first marriage ended

Hever Castle in Kent, a tourist attraction that was once the
childhood home of Anne Boleyn, is the Guthrie family’s most eye-
catching asset in a portfolio including farmland in Poland, Scottish
hydroelectric schemes and commercial, industrial and residential
interests in the UK. Guthrie, 80, and his family own Scarborough
Broadland Properties, which made profits of £3m on £32.7m
sales in 2014-15 and has £261.2m assets. 2016: £260m, 403=

Brownsword, 69, has vowed to rebuild Exeter’s Royal Clarence
hotel, devastated by fire last October. Built in 1769, the property is
said to be Britain’s oldest hotel , hosting guests from Lord Nelson
to Michael Jackson. Brownsword and wife Christina, 65, recently
added the Old Swan & Minster Mill, a 15th-century Cotswolds inn,
to their hotel collection. Brownsword sold his greetings card
business to US giant Hallmark for £165m in 1994 and the sports
retailer Snow & Rock for £50m in 2010. 2016: £272m, 388

As a former national table tennis champion and now managing
director of a family-owned haulage and warehousing group, Day,
58, from Cambridge, knows how to keep all the balls in the air. His
Suffolk-based operation Turners (Soham) smashed its profit and
sales record in 2015-16, making £24.3m on sales of £255.8m. Its
net assets of £225m were also the highest recorded for the firm,
set up in 1930 by his grandfather Wallace. 2016: £255m, 410=

Hood’s Multiflight operation sells helicopters and fixed-wing
aircraft from its headquarters at Leeds Bradford airport but he
made his fortune from Pace, the set-top box manufacturer he
co-founded with Barry Rubery (qv), selling £214m in shares when
it floated. After the Saltaire-based business merged with the US
Arris Group in 201 5 his stake was worth £72m. Wood, 69, owns an

In 2015-16 his company’s profits rose to £11.1m on turnover of
£178.6m. A Japanese operation bought a 40% stake in 2006
from Lady Smith, 76, and a business partner. While its net assets
have fallen by more than £23m to £129.7m, we value the firm at

Bibby Line Group saw its 2015 revenues fall 15% to £1.45bn and
profits dropped to £29.5m as the 210-year-old business faced a
tough time in its offshore oil and gas markets. With a strong
balance sheet and £298m net assets, the Liverpool firm can
weather the storm. Its portfolio includes retail chain Costcutter
and financial services. Bibby, 53, and his family have an 89%

Construction

East Ender Conway, 69, co-founded London developer Galliard
Homes. His latest venture is a £750m project known as the
Curtain, on the site of William Shakespeare’s former theatre in
Shoreditch. His group made £69.4m profit on £261.3m sales in
2015-16, with its net assets up by more than £100m to £142.9m.
Conway and his sons own half the firm. 2016: £220m, 460=

Finance

Leading Edinburgh banker Grossart, 80, started his working life
selling toffee from a Glasgow market stall. He co-founded Noble
Grossart in the Scottish capital in 1969 and owns at least 85%
with his family and trusts. Profits fell in 2015-16 from £15.6m to
£9.6m but assets soared to £209.5m. His daughter Flure joined
the board of the £280m business last year. 2016: £243m, 436
