school at 15 and after a spell in the navy bought an ice-cream van,
before focusing on property, care homes and a nursery chain. His
gyms made £11.2m profit in 2016 and his Darlington-based hotels
operation £1.2m in 2015. Bannatyne, 68, is expected to marry his

Derbyshire aviation operation AIL (Airline Investments Limited)
was formed in 2015 after Bond brothers Stephen, 67 tomorrow,
and Peter, 55, merged BMI Regional and Glasgow airport-based
Loganair. The siblings sold Bond Aviation, their Gloucestershire
helicopter business, for £275m in 2011. 2016: £225m, 457=

Ritblat, 81, and his son Jamie, 50, built the London property group
Delancey Estates, which in 2015-16 had assets of £42m. Ritblat
was chairman of British Land from 1970 to 2006 and sold most of
his stake for £57m. The sep arate family operation Creditincome

Construction

York-based Shepherd Building Group has completed such
projects as the Sky Plaza in Leeds and Liverpool’s City Square
development. It sold its construction arm two years ago and
focuses on its Portakabin modular-building business. The main
family-owned firm is worth its £18 3m net assets, to which we add
£40m for the 2015 sale and other wealth. 2016: £253m, 415=

Utley, 55, made £13m from the 2006 sale of Equity Insurance
before turning around the Bexhill-on-Sea-based insurer Hastings
Direct, netting £135m when 50% of the business was sold to
Goldman Sachs ahead of a £1.1bn float in 2015. The shares have
done well recently and with the operation valued at £1.55bn, Utley
is likely to reduce his stake, which is worth nearly £103m. He
bought David Beckham’s (qv) Hertfordshire mansion, dubbed
“Beckingham Palace”, for £11.4m in 2014. 2016: £192m, 553=

Parker, 61, started his career at appliance manufacturer Kenwood
in 1989. Over the next 20 years he turned around companies
including the AA and Clarks shoes, making about £77m in the
process. He moved to luggage group Samsonite and floated it on
the Hong Kong stock market in 2011. The Hampshire resident has
a £149m stake , having sold £31m worth of shares in the float, and
remains its non-executive chairman. He is head of the National

archaeology magazine Minerva, two restaurants in France and

A noted City pugilist, both in business and previously in the
boxing ring, Smith, 64 next Monday, sank £115m into his Fund smith
investment operation last September. He grew up in the East End
and later graduated from Cardiff University. His route to wealth
came when he led the management buyout of the Collins Stewart
broking firm for £122m, with the company growing to be worth
£1.7bn , and went on to run Tullett Prebon. 2016: £127m, 796=

RORY SWEET
Computers

Cotswolds-based IT entrepreneur Sweet, 50, owns the
20,000-acre Leobo private reserve in South Africa. He made
more than £220m from selling stakes in Zycko, RBR Networks
and MessageLabs , and in 2015 spent £38,000 on a 39ft Russian
rocket as the ultimate garden ornament. 2016: £220m, 460=

RATHEESAN YOGANATHAN
Telecoms

After fleeing civil war in his native Sri Lanka, Yoganathan, 41,
launched the London telecoms company Lebara in 2001, selling
international phone cards. It has more than 5m customers and he
owns a third of its shares. With profits down but assets still strong
at £118.5m we clip Yoganathan by £20m. 2016: £240m, 437=

Alli, 52, owns London-based Silvergate Media but made his first
fortune running the Planet 24 TV business. He remains a director
