With Apple’s creative genius set to unveil
the eighth incarnation of the iPhone this
year, the 10th anniversary of its launch,
industry experts say the Chingford-born
designer has slipped into the company
role once occupied by the late Steve Jobs
as “master collaborator and thinker”.
A string of bestsellers including the
iPod, iPhone and iPad has emerged from
the secretive studio where Ive, 50, designs
to a techno soundtrack. Few beyond his
long-serving core team have access —
and that includes his wife of almost 30
years, Heather Pegg, and their twin sons,
with whom he relaxes at home by
“drawing and making things”. Although
US-born, the boys still say “aluminium”
the British way, like their father.
The Newcastle Polytechnic graduate
was a product designer in London’s
Hoxton Square when he was lured to
California by Apple in 1992. Five years
later, at 29, he was promoted to senior
vice-president of industrial design. Details
of his pay are not made public, but
salaries, stock options and property —
including a $17m San Francisco home —
take him to £157m. 2016: £152m, 681=
