in 1993 from his father, who left £144m in his will. Bute, 59, sold his
secondary residence, Dumfries House, and its contents for £45m
in 2007 and regular art sales have raised further funds to restore
his 27,000-acre estate and Mount Stuart seat. A recent £8m

Hamilton has urged new Formula One
owner Liberty Media to lift the ban on the
use of social media by drivers on race
weekends. A prodigious Instagrammer
with more than 4m Twitter followers, he
complained in February that his sport was
late to the party: “They utilise social media
a lot better in football, in the NBA, in the
NFL... It’s a super-easy free tool for the
sport to use to engage with other people.”
The 32-year-old won his third F1
drivers’ championship in 2015 and needs
another world title to activate all the bonus
clauses in his three-year Mercedes deal,
which could raise his annual earnings from
driving alone to £33m. He has started the
new season well but faces stiff
competition from Germany’s Sebastian
Vettel and the resurgent Ferrari team.
The UK’s richest active sportsman,
Hamilton has sponsorship deals with IWC
watches, L’Oréal and Bombardier, one of
whose jets he uses to zip around the world
with his two bulldogs, fellow social media
stars Roscoe and Coco. Born in Stevenage,
he lives in Monaco and has a home in
Colorado. He pays little tax because of his
overseas residency. 2016: £106m, 931=
