The BBC’s adaptation of John l e Carré’s
The Night Manager had a breakout star
— and it was not Tom Hiddleston’s naked
bottom, or even his wannabe James
Bond six-pack. It was instead Spain’s
most exclusive villa, La Fortaleza, bought
by Lupton in 2011. The 17th-century
Mallorcan fortress has five houses, two
swimming pools and a helipad. It certainly
caught the attention of attendees at a
2015 Tory fundraiser, with a week’s stay
for 24 people fetching £220,000.

Lupton may have charged the BBC to
advertise his holiday house, but it is not
the first time he has shown his generosity
to the Tory party. He has donated more
than £3m and served as co- treasurer until
last year. In 2015 he was made a life peer.
Lupton, 61, established the London
arm of independent US bank Greenhill,
which floated on Wall Street in 2004. His
holding is worth £58.2m. An £8m profit
from the sale of a car insurer in 2014 adds
to his wealth. 2016: £105m, 936=
