In 1981 Sir Ian Botham scored 149 not out
to inspire one of the greatest comebacks
in cricketing history and win the third
Ashes Test match at Headingley. The bat
he used takes pride of place in Wray’s
Priory Collection of sporting memorabilia.
It includes items from football and rugby
and is kept at the football museum in
Preston, or at Twickenham or Lord’s.
Wray is a sporting fanatic and it was no
surprise when he became involved in
sport at a deeper level. In 1995 he bought
Saracens , the London-based Premiership
rugby club, who won the European Cup
for the first time last year. He has presided
over a series of stock market flotations ,
with his recent listings including the
estate agency group Hunters and medical
technology firm Derriston Capital.
He made his first fortune from a £6m
investment in Domino’s Pizza. He has
since sold stock worth more than £144m
and we see interests of £81m (up £9m) in
an array of quoted companies. Wray, 69,
