hile super-powered
men regularly bring
in big bucks at the box
office, the track record
for female fighters is far patchier.
However, a new incarnation of Wonder
Woman hopes to change that.
Israeli actress Gal Gadot will pull
on the Amazonian warrior’s bracelets
in the latest chapter of her cinematic
timeline, bringing along the modern
day values she holds true.

In the 75 years since she was
first created by DC Comics, Wonder
Woman (who is openly bisexual) has
worked as a suffragette, been hailed
an icon by eminent feminist Gloria
Steinem, fought for marriage equality
and always preferred a peaceful
resolution over going to war.
Last year, the heroine was named
a UN Honorary Ambassador for the
Empowerment of Women and Girls,
raising awareness for gender equality.

But sadly, this was scrapped soon
after, following a petition stating the
character was “overtly sexual”.
Gadot argues differently. “When
people argue that [she] should cover
up, I don’t quite get it,” she told Time
magazine earlier this year. “They say,
‘If she’s smart and strong, she can’t
also be sexy.’ That’s not fair. Why
can’t she be all of the above?”
Wonder Woman is in cinemas
from June 1.
