WF’s Jaymie Hooper investigates this time-saving treatment

YOU KNOW HOW CLARK KENT
IS SUPERMAN, Tony Stark is Iron Man
and Bruce Wayne is Batman? Well, I’ve
got an alter ego, too, but unlike those
guys, mine isn’t a crime-fi ghting badass.
Nope, my alter ego’s a sloth.
When I’m not waking up at 5.30am for
a HIIT sesh or rearranging my bedroom
furniture at 11pm, I can be found doing
one of the following: asking my boyfriend
to change the channel even though I’m
the one holding the remote (buttons are
hard) or banishing unwashed clothes
to The Chair instead of doing laundry.
But hey, we’re not here to talk about my
aversion to using the washing machine,
we’re here to talk about hair contouring and
how it’s every lazy girl’s new best friend.
Based on the same principles as
make-up contouring, hair contouring uses
dark and light tones to accentuate your
best assets and soften your not-so-good
ones. As it’s designed to give you a natural,
sun-kissed look minus the nasty regrowth,
it’s also incredibly low-maintenance and
winter-friendly, two points that made
me jump at the chance to trial Franck
Provost salon’s (franckprovost.com.au)
take on the trend, Indian Sun.
Since the treatment is tailored to
each individual’s needs, at the start of
my consultation, my stylist, Charline,
assessed my face shape, skin tone and
hair colour, then asked what type of look
I wanted. Although I’m not usually scared
of changing up my colour, I was trying
to go back to my roots (specifi cally, my
dirty-blonde ones), so I wanted to make
sure I didn’t go too light. As Charline
explained, though, Indian Sun treatments
never go more than three shades above or

I’d cheated on her with a diš erent stylist
and we were both surprised at how
unnoticeable my regrowth was. See?
It totally works, you guys, so get your hair
contoured, stat, then please come over
and turn my bedroom light oš because
it’s way too far away...

I HAD MY HAIR CONTOURED^

and it changed my life

below your current shade in the spirit
of staying au naturel. Phew!
Once she declared I had a square-
roundish face, Charline explained that
she’d lighten my roots and darken my
front layers. Why? According to Virginie
Gayssot, head of education for Franck
Provost, “Darker tones create shadows
and are used to shorten or narrow the
face, while lighter tones work to lengthen
by refl ecting light.” The science made
sense, and when Charline consulted a
colour map, I felt like I was in good hands,
so I relaxed and fell into an Instagram
vortex while she used a balayage brush
to coat my locks in their new hue.
One hour and two spine-tingling head
massages later, Charline introduced me to
my new ’do. At fi rst I couldn’t tell what had
changed, but then I noticed my jawbone
was more defi ned (I think), and the
honey-blonde highlights brightened up
my pasty skin and gave me that just-got-
back-from-the-Maldives look. It wasn’t a
dramatic change, which was a good thing,
because it wasn’t supposed to be.
The darker layers blended seamlessly
with my natural colour, so there weren’t
any tiger stripes, and if you’re wondering
how artifi cial colour can look ‘natural’, I’ll
let Gayssot fi ll you in: “Because the dye is
spread evenly through the hair, the colour
fades naturally over time, unlike foils, which
leave a distinct demarcation.” Know what
that means? You don’t need any touch-ups
for three to four months, so you can look
like an island goddess all winter long with
zero eš ort. I repeat, ZERO EFFORT.
When I hit up my regular hairdresser
for a cut two months later, the highlights
were still so subtle she didn’t even notice
